Conservatism and Imperialism Should Not Go Together

Colonialism in its most basic form is the conquering and subjugation of foreign lands to extract resources. The economic, societal, and military machine required to run a successful colony (and empire) results in a myriad of problems, all of which run opposite to conservatism: Racial and class strife, economic exploitation, dehumanization of natives, destruction of traditions and cultures, mercantilism, genocide, slavery, and political and legal injustice, often culminating in bloody revolutions. Even in its most benign form, colonialism degrades natives and puts up barriers against self-governance, wealth creation, and individual liberty.
